Having a shower curtain in your bathroom is absolutely practical. It can prevent moisture from leaving the bathtub and water splashing all over the floor. Besides that, it can add privacy while you are showering and an additional aesthetic appeal to the overall look of your bathroom.

However, shower curtains can quickly get dirty because they are always exposed to moisture. The most common response of homeowners when they get dirty is to get rid of them and replace them with a new one.

Are you tired of spending money buying a new shower curtain every time your old one gets dirty? Your dirty shower curtain doesn’t always need to be thrown away and replaced. You can easily clean them and make them look as good as new, saving you money from buying a new one.

How? Simply follow our tips on how to clean a shower curtain! Or, you can also get them professionally cleaned by a company like Helping Hands Cleaning Services

What is Your Shower Curtain Made of?

To know if you are using the right materials to clean your shower curtain, you need to identify first what your shower curtain is made of. Here are the different shower curtain materials:

  • Vinyl Shower Curtains

Vinyl shower curtains are popular because they are affordable and low-maintenance compared to cloth. You have many color and pattern choices if you opt for a vinyl shower curtain. Plus, it is relatively easy to clean too. That is because vinyl has a water-repellant problem, so mold and mildew are less of an issue.

One of the disadvantages of using a vinyl shower curtain is that it is not that durable. It can be easily slit by sharp objects and edges.

  • Polyester Shower Curtains

The polyester shower curtain is an alternative to vinyl. This shower curtain is also made of waterproof material that is durable, washable and has long wear and tear. But, it has a more fabric look and is heavier than its viny counterpart. So, make sure to hang it on a sturdy rack.

  • Cotton Shower Curtain

A cotton shower curtain is more pricey, but it is a good choice if you aim for a luxurious feel in your bathroom. It is more durable and the easiest to wash among the three.

How to clean shower curtain made of cotton? That’s easy! You can just wash it like all the other fabrics in your house. However, the only downside of using a cotton shower curtain is that it absorbs moisture quickly. Thus, you need to get a good liner to go along with it, or else it will be a perfect environment for molds and bacteria to develop and thrive. Or you can also look for a cotton shower curtain with an anti-bacterial and anti-mildew coating to avoid that from happening.

What Materials Do You Need in Cleaning Your Shower Curtain?

The cleaning ingredients that you need to clean your shower curtain will depend on its material. In this section, we’ll provide a list of cleaning materials for cotton shower curtains and for vinyl or polyester shower curtains. In addition to that, there are also versatile cleaning products that you may use for any material.

For Cotton Shower Curtains

  • Laundry detergent (You may utilize any detergent that you use to wash your clothes)
  • Baking soda
  • A plastic tub or bucket (make sure that it is big enough to fit the entire shower curtain in)
  • Rubber gloves

For Vinyl and Polyester Shower Curtains

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Abrasive dish sponge
  • Small bucket (for rinsing the shower curtain)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Clean rag or towel

For All Types of Shower Curtains

  • Bleach solution (mix equal parts of bleach and water)
  • Spray bottle (to use for your bleach solution)

Once you have all your cleaning necessities ready, you may now proceed on how to clean your shower curtain.

2 Methods of Cleaning A Shower Curtain

There are two ways on how to clean a shower curtain: hand washing and machine washing.

Let’s discuss!

Handwashing

  1. Wear your rubber gloves for skin protection.
  2. With the bleach solution that you prepared, spray all the areas with mildew or pink mold while your shower curtain is still attached to the rod. Leave it there for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the curtain from the rod and put it in a large tub or bucket.
  4. Fill it with warm water until your shower curtain is fully submerged.
  5. Add one tablespoon of liquid detergent.
  6. Massage the curtain, especially the areas with heavy staining and mold build-up.
  7. If you are having a hard time removing the stains, add a tablespoon of bleach to the tub, mix it, and let it soak for at least 10 minutes.
  8. Inspect if there are still stains. If there are, spray the area again with a bleach solution, then sprinkle baking soda on it.
  9. Vigorously scrub the area with an abrasive dish sponge.
  10. Drain the tub while leaving the curtain inside. Refill it with water and swish around to remove the detergent.
  11. Drain and repeat the process until the water runs clear.
  12. Take out the shower curtain, spread it out, and wipe the excess water with a clean rag or towel.
  13. Place it on the rod, spread it, and allow it to air dry.

Machine

  1. The first and second steps in handwashing are the exact steps you should do when cleaning your shower curtain in the washer.
  2. Once you are done with the first two steps, you may now remove your shower curtain and place it in the washing machine.
  3. Put laundry detergent inside for the smallest load if you are washing your shower curtain separately. You may adjust the amount of detergent depending on your load size.
  4. Run a normal cycle with warm water. The warm water can help in eliminating germs and bacteria.
  5. Take out the shower curtain, spread it out on the rod, and air dry. Air drying will prolong its life.
