How to Get Red Wine Out of Carpet

Closet Storage Ideas | Helping Hands Cleaning Services

A glass or two of red wine can make your day better. It tastes great paired with steak and has many health benefits. Red wine has powerful antioxidants. Studies have shown that it can improve cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure.

The only downside to this beverage is it can stain your teeth, clothes, and a spill can stain your carpet. The tough staining is due to the pigments and colors in the wine called chromogens. The substance is like the molecules in dyes. Red wine also has tannin, which is also used to make ink.

It’s no wonder many homeowners are afraid of wine stains. A little spill can damage a pristine carpet. But – the stain doesn’t have to be permanent. You can bring it back to its former glory if you know how to get red wine out of the carpet. You can even do this with materials you have in  your home.

Removing Wine Stains with Soap and Vinegar

Nearly every household has vinegar and dishwashing soap. You can use these two essentials to create a stain removal mixture.

  • Blot the stain as much as you can. Cover it with paper towels or a clean white cloth. Press the material down in a gentle manner. Do not rub it dry.
  • Add one tablespoon each of white vinegar and dishwashing soap to two cups of tepid water.
  • Mix it with care.
  • Pour a small amount of the mixture onto the stain. Blot it with a white cloth. Do this several times until the stain disappears. You should only use white cloth for this. The pigments of a colored rag might bleed into the carpet if you use it.

Removing Wine Stains with Club Soda

Another go-to solution when it comes to stains is club soda. This cleaning method has been around for centuries, and it’s still as effective today as it was then. Here’s what you should do:

  • Blot the stain with a clean, dry towel or rag. Make sure you blot as much of the liquid as you can.
  • Pour club soda on the stain.
  • Blot some more.

– Pour more club soda.

  • Blot the area. Repeat the process until you get rid of the wine stain.

Removing Stains with Baking Soda and Powders

It might come as a surprise but you can also use dry, powdery materials to deal with wine stains. You can use baby powder, baking soda, or an unused kitty litter. Salt also works well.

  • Blot the stain with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Apply salt or baking soda over the stain. Be generous with the amount. It must cover the whole stain.
  • Give it time to settle and absorb the liquid.
  • Vacuum the stained area.
  • You might have to use this method alongside other stain removers.

Removing Wine Stains with Hydrogen Peroxide

If all else fails, you can always use hydrogen peroxide. But you should consider this as a last resort since it can cause a slight discoloration on your carpet. You can check in advance though. Try testing the solution in a part of the carpet that’s not noticeable. It will show you if it will cause a change in color or not. If it doesn’t, you can proceed by doing the following:

  • Blot the stain with a towel or a clean cloth.
  • Mix one part of dishwashing soap with two parts hydrogen peroxide. Test it on a small part of the carpet. Check for discoloration.
  • If there’s no change in the carpet color, you can apply the solution to the wine stain. Use a clean cloth or sponge.
  • Let it sit anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour.
  • Blot the area dry.
  • Repeat the process until the stain disappears.

Removing Stains Using White Vinegar

White vinegar is another household staple. It has many uses, including removing stains. It’s quite effective against red and purple stains as it neutralizes these colors.

  • Start by blotting the stain with a dry cloth.
  • Spray the stained area with cool water. This will dilute the wine. Keep blotting.
  • Cover the wine stain with white vinegar.
  • Apply a small amount of dish soap.
  • Blot to remove the stain.
