How To Kill COVID on Surfaces

Bathroom Cleaning Checklist | Helping Hands Cleaning Services

When you’re cleaning and disinfecting, you can’t be too careful. The coronavirus pandemic has made us all vigilant about killing germs. You can keep your home or office safe from dangerous viruses and bacteria by following these cleaning procedures.

Keep Your Home and Family Safe

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the country, health experts tell us there are three main things we can do to help contain it. We can wear masks, regularly wash our hands and disinfect the surfaces in our homes and offices. Containing the transmission of the COVID-19 virus is the best thing we can do.

Fortunately, the virus can be killed. You can keep your home safe using simple, basic cleaning products like bleach and rubbing alcohol. Using them properly after you clean will keep your home and family safe. You’ll ensure disinfection by using the right products and the correct cleaning techniques.

What’s the Best Cleaning Method To Ensure You Kill the Virus?

Is there a specific way to kill COVID on surfaces? You can remove the virus by following these steps every time you clean.

Start with the basics:

  • Always wear gloves to protect your hands.
  • Wash your hands before and after you clean.
  • Keep rooms well ventilated when you clean.

The Five-Step Cleaning Process To Kill Covid

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend this five-step cleaning procedure to kill COVID on surfaces. You can use it to clean all the surfaces in your home or office.

  1. Begin by washing the surface with soap and water.

  1. When the surface dries, apply a disinfecting solution. Apply enough to wet the surface.

  1. Allow the disinfecting solution to sit for at least one minute.

  1. Let the surface air dry or wipe it with a clean cloth.

  1. Pay special attention to high-touch areas like doorknobs, wall switches, desks, drawer handles, keyboards, toilets and faucets.

This procedure will destroy the coronavirus on surfaces. You should also pay attention to surfaces that might be exposed to the virus like laundry baskets, shopping totes and countertops.

Which Cleaning Products Should You Use?

You can use a diluted bleach formula to disinfect hard surfaces, soft surfaces and laundry. Health experts recommend using a bleach that contains 5.25–8.25% sodium hypochlorite. You can also use a rubbing alcohol that is at least 70% alcohol.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created a list of brand name cleaning products that will kill the virus. As EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a press release, “Using the correct disinfectant is an important part of preventing and reducing the spread of illnesses along with other critical aspects such as hand washing.”

The EPA list includes well-known names like Clorox, Lysol and Purell, but generic bleach and alcohol will also work well.

Who’s at Risk in Your House?

Some people are more vulnerable to catching the coronavirus and getting seriously ill from it. They include:

  • People with chronic illnesses like cancer, sickle cell disease or diabetes.
  • Anyone with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Children with weakened immune systems or developmental disorders.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Anyone with lifestyle factors like smoking, high blood pressure and obesity.

Anyone who’s physically weakened by illness or a weak immune system is at risk. So are health care workers and those who have a lot of contact with the public. Take extra care if you have high-risk people in your home.

Although there are some cases of pets who have contracted the coronavirus, the chances of your pets catching the virus or transmitting it to you are low.
