How to Remove Turmeric Stains

Bathroom Cleaning Checklist | Helping Hands Cleaning Services

Let’s now talk about “How to remove turmeric stains?”

If you love Indian cuisine, then you probably have Tumeric in your pantry. You can even add it to your smoothies and other drinks due to its health benefits.

While turmeric is considered an amazing spice, it can cause stains. And like all stains, you have to act fast if you want to remove them completely.

What Is Turmeric?

Before we share our tips, here’s a bit of a refresher about turmeric.

Turmeric is related to ginger and is the root of a tropical plant. You will notice its deep orange-yellow color, which is also responsible for fabric stains. It has become popular in many dishes, not just for its aroma and flavor. The color itself gives any recipe an appetizing golden color.

In India, this spice is considered sacred because of its color that resembles the sunlight. Some believe turmeric has superpowers and they include it in their ceremonies and rituals. As amazing as it is, the stains are not as pleasing. So let’s not waste time and hop right into our techniques to remove turmeric stains.

How To Remove Turmeric Stains From Clothes

It’s annoying to spill Turmeric on clothes and other fabrics.

Remove it right away.

When at home, we recommend running cold water over the stain or soaking it in mild detergent for 20 minutes. Never use hot water because that will just set the stain further which would cause an even bigger problem.

What if you are at a restaurant? Obviously, you can’t soak it there. An alternative is to find a slice of lemon or lemon juice and apply it to the stain for about 15 minutes. Use ice cubes if you can’t rinse them with cold water.

Another bright solution is to use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol. It can help in breaking the turmeric’s pigment. Just dab it onto the affected area using a damp towel.

Air dry your fabrics in the sun as it has natural bleaching powers. However, for colored clothes, you should dry them inside to retain their bright hue.

For your delicate white fabrics, soak these in a mixture of bleach and hot water for 15 minutes.

How To Remove Turmeric Stains From Carpet

It’s quite frustrating to see that your carpet has turmeric stains. The first thing to do is remove the excess as much as possible. Then use a damp towel for blotting. Remember not to scrub the stain as you’re going to make it worse.

Create a paste using baking soda, water, and liquid dish soap and apply it to the stain for 15 minutes. Remove the paste using a cloth or spoon and blot the area with a clean towel.

How To Remove Turmeric Stains From Your Dishes

In some cases, putting your dishes in your dishwasher should remove the stain. But what if it doesn’t? Well, here’s a solution for you.

Mix one-part vinegar or bleach and two-parts hot water. You can then place your dishes and let them soak overnight. For others, soaking the dishes for 15 – 30 minutes should do the job. You can do this trick to your processor bowls, glass, plastics, and ceramic dishes.

Remove the dishes from the solution and clean these using liquid soap and a non-scratch sponge. Rinse using warm water.

If you use your dishwasher, have it at the hottest setting after you’ve soaked the dishes. Look for dishwashing soaps that are specially made for stains.

How To Remove Turmeric Stains From Your Countertop

It’s very likely you will stain your countertop with turmeric, especially if you use it frequently to cook with or when preparing your meal and drinks. If this happens, all you have to do is wipe it off right away. However, we understand that we are often immersed in what we are doing in the kitchen and the spill may go unnoticed.

To remove the stains from your countertop, first identify what your counter is made of. Generally, you can use water and baking soda to make a paste. You can then apply the solution directly to the stain and wait for 15 minutes. Once done, you can gently scrub the solution using a circular motion.

If you think that the mixture isn’t working, you can always try vinegar and lemon. But before you apply anything to your countertop, make sure it won’t ruin the material, or you’ll end up spending more on repairs. Take note that using lemon and vinegar on marble and granite might ruin the surface of your countertop.

How To Remove Turmeric Stains On Skin And Nails

When working in the kitchen, it’s possible to have turmeric stains on your nails and fingers. Having hand or finger stains can be unsightly and annoying. Here are a few tips that can help you remove it.

First, try removing the stain using rubbing alcohol. Use a cotton ball and rub it over the stain. When done, wash your hands using soap and warm water.

Creating a baking soda and lemon juice paste will also do the trick. It will exfoliate your skin and reduce the yellow pigment. Again, use warm water to wash away the stain.

As for your nails, you can submerge them in a bowl of dish soap for 10-15 minutes. We recommend using citrus brands due to their brightening properties.

If your hands become dry, apply a moisturizing product after removing the turmeric stain from your fingers and nails.

How To Prevent Turmeric Stains

As cliche as this may sound, “Prevention is better than the cure.” While we’ve already shared the tips on how to remove turmeric stains, you should avoid them as much as possible. Here are some ways to prevent having turmeric stains.

Use Protective Clothing

When using turmeric, stay away from wearing white clothes. Use an apron and wear gloves.

Choose The Right Surface

Turmeric can stain faster on a porous surface like wood. Select a surface to work on, like glass.

Clean It Right Away

As always, clean the stain as quickly as possible. If you are outside, you can follow the alternatives we’ve shared above.
